1 year, $20....2 years, $30......3 years, $35

1 year international rate is $25

What you get for that

  1. 5% merchandise credit on all purchases, issued once per year.

  3. Access to cycling gear you can't find anywhere else on earth. Some things you can buy elsewhere, but some other things, no.

A subscription to The Rivendell Reader, our version of a bike magazine. It's between 32 and 48 pages long, usually, although the current one (RR39) is 60 pages. It comes out two to three times a year. Here's something about it:

There are no ads, unless you consider the whole thing an ad for Rivendell Bicycle Works, but you'd have to be looking for trouble to see it that way.

The interviews are long, and with interesting people. Some from the past are; Mayhard Hershon, Lon Haldeman, Tom Ritchey, Sheldon Brown, Jobst Brandt, Richard Sachs, Gilles Berthoud, Andy Hampsten. Point is, we have decent interviews.

Inside, sometimes behind-the-scenes looks at companies and processes. How something's made, for instance.

How To, Informative, Instructional pieces that help you understand your bicycle better, and sometimes transform it in a good way.

Our customer's bikes. How they've set them up. This section may give you ideas, too.

Letters. But we don't print any letters praising us, or "the new layout," or anything like that.

Always a column by Maynard Hershon.

Sometimes a reprint from some other publication, usually a story that's interesting or good, but has nothing to do with bikes. We did one on type design recently. We did one on a typewriter repairman. These non-cycling_ articles don't always focus on type, but they're always special in a way that makes them worth the paper they're printed on, and the $100 to $300 we pay for the reproduction rights.

What The Rivendell Reader lacks:

  • Hero worship
  • Racing coverage
  • Recipes
  • A General health and nutrition column, which while useful, are generally some combination of old hat & common sense, and we'll have none of it.
  • An emphasis on changing your body.
  • Color photos. We'd like to have more, but as it is, you're lucky to get one on the cover. Usually it's just black & white.
  • Predictability and regularity. We used to shoot for 4 issues per year, but we've averaged 3, and will make no promises on that one anymore. Basically, you join for the rebate, and the Reader comes when it comes.

All in all, it's good for you and good for us.
